Pleae note: This is a hybrid work position in Calgary Alberta and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility the remaining 40% of the work week. This hybrid work plan allows for critically important learning, collaboration and networking with our colleagues. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.

Overview of role:

This position will report to the IT Product Manager of Crew Operations. The systems supported are required-to-fly systems for Crew Management (scheduling, bidding, qualifications, payroll, etc.), and have integrations with many other applications (flight systems, HR, vendor systems, etc.). The successful candidate will work closely with IT Architecture teams and provide logical drawings of the planned implementation of systems. They will also be working closely with the IT Crew Operations members to understand the IT requirements of application support teams and also work closely with the business partners. They will help lead the team in terms of technology improvements and act as a guide and mentor for the team.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provides definitive and expert advice in their specialist area.
  • Actively maintains recognized expert level knowledge in on or more identifiable specialisms.
  • Oversees the provision of specialist advice by others.
  • Consolidates expertise from multiple sources, including third-party experts, to provide coherent advice to further organizational objectives.
  • Supports and promotes the development and sharing of knowledge within the organization.
  • Collaborates with others to ensure advice is appropriate to the organizational needs.
  • Monitors the external environment to gather intelligence on emerging technologies.
  • Advise on the right way to apply standards and methods, ensuring compliance and maintain technical responsibility for all the stages and iterations of a software development project.
  • Provide technical advice to stakeholders and set team-based standards for programming tools and techniques.
  • Assess and documents the impacts, threats, and opportunities to the organization.
  • Take ownership of problems and proactively resolve technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements and have the know how to take full accountability for actions taken and decisions made.
  • Work with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built.
  • Find ways to improve system robustness, resilience, and stability.
  • Creates reports and technology roadmaps and shares knowledge and insights with others.
  • Involved in identifying appropriate technology and approaches, deciding when software should be written.
  • Work with operational partners to ensure the supportability of new features/products and to provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications.
  • Coordinate build activities across systems, undertakes and supports integration testing activities.
  • Produce detailed designs and document work using required standards, methods, and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate.
  • Provide technical leadership, coach, teach and mentor your team.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and adoption of best practices.
  • Leads workshops, presentations, and training that provide skill and knowledge development for the team.
  • Leads reviews of own work and reviews of colleagues' work
  • Work with operational partners to ensure the supportability of new features/products and to provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications.
  • Engage in meaningful interactions and relationships with users and can manage competing priorities.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree and 5+years of experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Project Management, Networking, Firewalls, Architecture, Logical Diagramming, VMware certifications/licensure considered an asset.
  • Requires expert problem-solving skills and advanced interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in managing service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance target.
  • Proficient in dealing with high-impact, complex change requests. Ability to ensure that release policies, procedures and processes are applied.
  • Proficient in leading investigations and resolution of incidents.
  • Proficient in managing planning of system and/or acceptance tests, coordinating both functional and non-functional specifications.
  • Proficient in providing authoritative advice and guidance on test planning and can identify the process improvements and contribute to definition of best practice.
  • Proficient in collaborating with others when necessary to review specifications and can use these agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium to high complexity, using the right standards and tools.
  • Proficient in working on complex integration as part of a wider team.
  • Proficient in integration builds and can coordinate build activities across systems and have undertaken and supported integration testing activities.
  • Experience in initiating and monitoring actions to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems, including consulting specialists where required and can determine the appropriate remedy and assist with implementation of it as well as preventative measures.
  • Broad understanding of information security and can design solutions and services with security controls embedded, specifically engineered as mitigation against security threats as a core part of the solutions and services.
  • Broad understanding of standards for definition, security and integrity of objects and ensure conformance to these standards.
  • Expertise in understanding and identifying problems, analyzing, and helping to identify the appropriate solution. You can classify and prioritize problems, document their causes, and implement remedies.
  • Expertise in understand whole systems and take responsibility for teaching this to others.
  • Expertise in identifying process optimization opportunities with guidance and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions.
  • Expertise in reviewing the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology.
