This is a hybrid work position in Calgary Alberta and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility the remaining 40% of the work week. This hybrid work plan allows for critically important learning, collaboration and networking with our colleagues. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.

Overview of the role:

WestJet's Digital team is seeking a dynamic Senior Leader to spearhead a software development team dedicated to building digital products that empower and modernize our internal departments, such as Operations, Finance, and HR.

As a key member of the leadership team, you will collaborate with product managers, senior leaders, and business stakeholders to drive the implementation of cutting-edge tools, systems, services, and processes. Your work will directly impact WestJet's ability to optimize operations, improve on-time performance, reduce costs, and enhance our response to IROPS and XROPS.

In addition to delivering innovative solutions, you will lead a 24/7 support team to ensure the seamless maintenance and enhancement of these critical systems. This role is integral to shaping WestJet's operational efficiency while championing modernization and resiliency across the organization.

Key deliverables include:

  • Responsible for leading the 24x7 support team, application software development, DevOps engineering, and Quality Assurance testing activities that analyze, design, develop, test and operate solutions for the airline operations teams.

  • Collaborate with business leadership, IT and other integrated partners - to ensure delivery of features, capabilities align with business rules, support on time performance, and regulatory timelines.

  • Responsible for establishing and leading the Technology Roadmap for the Operations teams Works in collaboration with Digital Product leadership and Technology IT Leadership to align capabilities, and functionality to support business strategic initiatives (increase airport flow thru, reduce/optimize IROP events, optimize business rule enforcement, enable self-service, etc.).

  • Provides technical expertise and leadership of the technology and platform infrastructure, with a focus on enterprise scalability, reliability, performance, and security.

  • Responsible for strategic leadership of budget, resource capacity planning, and technology roadmap delivery.

  • Responsible for day-to-day leadership and performance management of the DevOps analysts, Software Developers, QA Analysts, internal and external delivery partners.

  • Establish and report on OKRs and KPIs for the implemented solutions and optimizing support and development goals and processes - to drive efficient, predictable, and transparent output and value for our business.

  • Partnering with Digital Business Development teams to support and deliver new products and services for new areas of our business, to drive growth, efficiency, and resiliency.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of in-depth experience in all phases of software development supported by a bachelor's degree or relevant years of experience.

  • Proven ability to effectively lead Development Teams and coach Developers and Contractors in object-oriented design, development and automated unit testing best practices.

  • Proven ability to provide accurate estimates for Development activities as part of larger project or product sustainment plans.

  • Able to lead and facilitate the design and development process in a fast-paced, highly complex, rapidly evolving business environment.

  • Expert knowledge of software development best practices in an enterprise environment.

  • Sound, practical understanding of iterative, agile development processes and practices such as Scrum, Kanban.

  • Expert hands-on experience with enterprise-grade Web development, Java, J2EE, Vue.js, Node.js, application servers and associated tools.

  • Strong experience with relational databases such as SQL Server and Oracle in an enterprise environment.

  • Proven ability to plan and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment in which priorities and direction may shift frequently.

  • Proven ability to build strong business relationships with product owner(s) and business stakeholders.

  • Strong customer focus coupled with excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Previous leadership experience is ideal, but not mandatory.
