Job Description

To support manufacturing engineering activities with an emphasis on the industrialization of (tooling up for) aircraft steering kits, tooling up and retrofitting new and existing machine tools as well as on the support for sustaining programs in the manufacturing engineering department. The level of knowledge and experience in designing workholding, cutting and inspection tooling for machining, assembling and special processes are the key for a successful candidate.

Job Requirements

• Conceptual, embodiment and detail design of a broad range of machining and assembling tools such as machining and assembling fixtures and jigs, cutting and inspection tools, and test fixtures.
• Design of special processing and material handling equipment used in manufacturing processes and ensuring full compliance of the equipment with safety and environment regulations.
• Redesign and improvement of existing tools as required.
• Follow principles of design for safety, cost and quality as well as principles of design for ergonomics, manufacturability, assembly, maintainability and minimum risk.
• Support manufacturing process improvements through innovative design input on new tooling and modification of existing tooling.
• Work in conjunction with manufacturing engineers, CNC programmers, tool & die makers and machinists to ensure designed tools meet original requirements and end user's needs.
• Liaise with tool manufacturers / suppliers and external contractors to ensure the tooling and other manufacturing equipment made for SAFRAN meet all the necessary requirements.

Skills and Core Competencies
o Experience working with machine shop & assembly environment.
o Must be proficient in CATIA v5 software.
o 5 years of experience in the aerospace industry preferred and 3 to 5 years of direct work on design and production of tooling and industrial equipment.
o Ability to do mechanical stress hand calculations.
o Experience with CATIA Stress Analysis Module and/or ABAQUS/CAE software.
o Knowledge of engineering materials and their selection.
o Experience in designing tooling for landing gear components manufacture in a precision machine shop & assembly environment would be an asset.
o Good knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as well as engineering drafting practices and related technical standards.
o Familiarity with methods (process) engineering as well as with CNC/CMM programming and CNC machining.
o Knowledge of off-the-shelf tooling components and their selection.
o Ability to visualize drawings and objects.
o Team and goal oriented, self-motivated, and possessing a strong work ethic.
o Able to communicate clearly and directly both verbally and in writing.
o Project and time management skills with good sense of urgency.
o Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Project, Excel).
o Showing critical, creative and incisive thinking; result-oriented with leadership and organizational skills.
o Strong and continuous focus on process improvement.

Education and/or certifications:
Degree or diploma in Mechanical, Aerospace or Manufacturing Engineering.

Work experience:
5 to 10 years of experience in the design of complex tools preferably for CNC metal cutting machinery and related manufacturing equipment.

Specialized knowledge:
In depth knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, Catia v5 software and SmarTeam v5 software.
