Position title: Manager, Environmental Protection

Reports to: Senior Director, Sustainability and Environmental Protection

Airports Council International (ACI) is the only global trade association representing the collective interests of airports worldwide. Established in 1991, ACI collaborates with governments and international organizations such as ICAO, develops standards, policies, and best practices, and delivers essential information and training to elevate airport operations globally.

Position overview

ACI is looking for a Manager, Environmental Protection, to lead advocacy and technical efforts for the organization. This role is integral in advancing ACI's sustainability objectives across the aviation sector, working closely with global partners and stakeholders. The position is based in Montreal (hybrid), a central hub for international aviation organizations, and offers a unique opportunity to shape sustainable practices on a global scale.

The successful candidate:

  • Is an experienced expert on environmental issues of air transport, including airports;
  • Has experience and flexibility working with complex portfolios which involve concurrent projects and tasks.
  • Possesses technical expertise and good understanding of the international aviation framework and stakeholders to successfully represent ACI at the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) technical Working Groups and at other international forums;
  • Possesses a strong ability to converge different views and to convince based on technical argument;
  • Has strong analytical skills to generate insightful information and further develop ACI policies;
  • Is a strong communicator who can develop technical working papers, policies briefs, training and other related material and present/deliver them to diverse audiences;
  • Is a tactful professional, who can comfortably work with divergent views in a very broad cultural environment and contribute to the further development of the air transport industry.

Main responsibilities:

Acting as advisor to the ACI Observer of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP)

  • Supporting the development of ACI's positions at the CAEP level, including coordination with ACI nominated experts and ACI regions.
  • Coordinating airport participation in CAEP.
  • Participating in meetings, developing papers for, and providing technical input to working groups, Steering Groups and CAEP meetings.
  • Increasing internal and external visibility of CAEP activities.

Supporting the secretary of the ACI World Environment Standing Committee (WEnSC) and its Strategic Framework:

  • Supporting task forces meetings, including logistics, coordination, work program development, and providing technical inputs.
  • Coordinating work items with Committee members, Task Force members and ACI regions.
  • Facilitating cooperation/coordination between WEnSC and ACI regional committees, and CAEP.
  • Drafting documentation (guidance material, policy briefs, etc.), conducting surveys, analysing data and any other relevant technical material as necessary.

Providing technical expertise on environmental matters

  • Supporting the development and coordination of environmental content and logistics for ACI events, communication initiatives (social media, blogs, news articles, speaking points, etc.) and website.
  • Preparing and making presentations at relevant events.
  • Providing technical material and responses to stakeholders' requests.
  • Drafting technical reports and other materials as needed.
  • Managing upkeep and strategic development of tools such as the ACI Airport Carbon Emissions and Reporting Tool (ACERT).
  • Developing additional tools to support ACI members with improving/facilitating their sustainability management programs.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Supporting ACI Global Training (GT) by preparing and reviewing training materials, delivering courses, and/or reviewing student works.
  • Supporting Airport Excellence (APEX) in Environment by reviewing documents and providing technical expertise as requested.
  • Coordinating ACI engagement with academia and other international organizations.
  • Other tasks as required.

Technical knowledge, skills, and abilities

Required:

  • University degree in environmental management/science, sustainable development, air transport management, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge/experience in aviation environmental initiatives and strategies.
  • Knowledge/experience in international organizations and relations, advocacy, and member interests.
  • Pro-active, collegial, tactful, diplomatic approach.
  • Capable of working individually with minimum supervision as well as part of a team, in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Highly organized and able to work on multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Strong analytical skills to generate insightful information to help develop ACI policies.
  • Excellent written, spoken and presentational English skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of the MS Office suite.

Desirable:

  • Experience of the ICAO CAEP process as a regulator, industry representative or NGO.
  • Working knowledge in another language.
